Chapter 18 The Dress Event
The dinner party at the Lewis Family would start at 8:30 pm.
Bree arrived at the Lewis Family's place early in the morning to learn about organizing the party from Hilda.
Hilda had married into the Lewis Family for many years. Even though she was from a humble background, she had become quite good at organizing something like a dinner party.
Bree watched everything in silence and did not make any comment, pretending to be an ignorant, silly girl.
Seeing that the decoration work with the house was almost done and that it was getting late, Hilda asked Bree to get changed and put on some makeup.
Bree's complexion was originally fair and delicate. Therefore, the makeup artist only applied a thin layer of foundation on her face and then focused on her eye makeup.
Bree's eyes, crystal-clear and bright, became even more gorgeous and moisturized after the makeup was applied.
As soon as her makeup was finished, Hilda came in.
She immediately spotted Bree sitting in front of the dressing table.
Her sitting posture was graceful and elegant, and her smile was bright and pretty.
For a moment, Hilda felt like she had traveled through time as she saw the woman named Merilyn in Bree. In fact, Merilyn's every move, gesture, smile, and everything used to make Hilda feel ashamed of herself.
Bree, too, saw Hilda in the mirror and, naturally, did not miss the shock and dismay in the latter's eyes.
"Hilda?" Tamping down her confusion inside, Bree stood up.
"Huh?" Hilda came to her senses. "What?"
"Anything wrong with my makeup?" Bree asked nervously as if she had not noticed Hilda's distraction.
"No, nothing's wrong." Hilda smiled and patted Bree's hand. "You look amazing with makeup on. No wonder Leo likes you so much!"
Hilda told herself to stop overthinking.
Bree was just an ignorant, verdant girl. Hilda thought she must have been overwhelmed by the tumultuous work.
Bree lowered her head with a shy expression on her face.
"You and Leo are married. Why are you being shy?" Hilda hid the scorn in her eyes and arranged for a servant to bring in Bree's dress.
When the servant walked in with the dress in her arms, she accidentally collided with another servant holding coffee cups in her hand.
With two panicked screams, two cups of fragrant coffee were spilled on the pure white dress.
"How could you be so careless!" Hilda snapped, and the two servants hurried to beg for forgiveness.
Bree watched the scene with a sneer in her heart.
While scolding the two servants, Hilda thought that Bree would come to plead for mercy for them. However, Bree just sat there and watched everything as if she was frightened.
Hilda dismissed the two servants with anger inside and then said to Bree, "Fortunately, there are two spare dresses. I have asked someone to get them. Don't worry."
Bree flashed a smile and said nothing.
Soon, another two servants came in with two gowns.
"Madam, there is a guest downstairs wearing a dress just like this one," one of the servants whispered in Hilda's ear.
"What?" Hilda faked a frown and then said, "Then, Bree, why don't you wear the pink one?"
"It will come when it comes," Bree told herself.
In fact, Hilda prepared three dresses for Bree.
The white one was gentle and demure.
The black one was elegant and classy.
The pink one was smart and adorable.
Harvey was supposed to introduce Leo to those businessmen in S City. As his wife, Bree would be despised if she wore the pink dress.
It would undoubtedly disgrace Leo, her husband.
Though Bree maintained silence, Hilda was in no hurry.
There were only three available dresses.
The white one had become too dirty to wear.
Hilda would not allow Bree to wear the black one as someone else was wearing the same. Otherwise, people would think that the Lewis Family could not even afford some decent dresses.
So, Bree had to wear the pink one.
"Hilda, I don't like this one," Bree said in a soft voice.
"Bree, be mature." Hilda became somewhat less patient. "Tonight is significant for Leo, and you need to be a sensible woman. You just have to wear the dress once, and I'll take you to purchase several pieces that you like tomorrow."
While Hilda was speaking, a figure appeared in the doorway.
"Leo?" Hilda froze, smiled, and said, "You're here for Bree, aren't you? She is unwilling to get changed into the dress."
Without sparing a glance at Hilda, Leo handed a box to Bree, who was smiling wickedly at him.
"Guess what? I've asked Leo to prepare a dress for me in case of an accident. So, I'm not wearing the pink one."
Bree took the box over and then entered the dressing room, completely ignoring Hilda's twisted expression at this moment.
