Chapter 17 The Bracelet Is Broken?

Hervey swiftly transferred Phoenix Apparel and Corbyn's Mansion under Leo's name. Besides, he intended to throw a party to introduce Leo to all the wealthy and influential families in S City.

No one cared whether he did it because he felt guilty and wanted to compensate Leo, or it was just a show to hold on to his shares.

After taking over Phoenix Apparel, Leo became busy, while Bree continued hunting for a job.

One day, Bree received a call from Hilda inviting her to visit the Lewis Family.

"Bree, here you are!"

Hilda enthusiastically grabbed Bree's hand, saying, "Take a seat! Is it hot out there? Sorry to have called you over."

"It's okay. I don't have much to do at home anyway." Bree smiled politely.

"That's good." Hilda's smile became brighter. "The party will be held the day after tomorrow, and time is running out. So, I think I must talk to you to avoid leading to chaos."

Leading to chaos?

Bree ruminated over Hilda's wording with a twinkle in her eyes.

That was apparently a meaningful expression!

Was it a subtle hint that Hilda was worried that Bree's humble background might embarrass the Lewis Family?

"All the dinner party attendees are influential people in town, including some of the Lewis Group's business partners. You remember Patrice, right? The girl who dined at our house the other day." Hilda said while sizing up Bree's expression.

"Yes?"

Hilda could not figure out what Bree was thinking through her simple reply.

Hilda knew that Patrice had met Bree for the second time the other day. In fact, Hilda was instrumental in making the meeting happen.

To her surprise, Bree, a young woman in Hilda's eyes, performed calmly and composedly.

As Bree kept reticent, Hilda did not know how to bring up the long speech she had prepared.

"Originally..." Hilda wished to speak but stopped on second thought, and she then faked a smile. "Well, Never mind. You and Leo are married."

Hehe!

Her tone and wording were clearly saying that she did mind.

Bree thought to herself, "Well, it'll be too impolite of me to not respond to her at this moment."

Therefore, the young woman flashed a tender smile, saying, "I know. That's alright."

The smile on Hilda's face froze, and she could not tell if Bree was really innocent or that Bree deliberately did not want her to speak out her prepared speech.

"That's great. That's great." Hilda curled up her lips into an awkward smile and then took the initiative to divert the subject.

"The dinner party is about introducing Leo to the others, so I think you and Leo should perform the opening dance."

Hilda's eyes twinkled. She initially wanted to ask if Bree could dance but changed her mind when she said, "Bree, you and Leo are a lovely couple. I believe you will stun the others."

Hilda thought that Bree, a girl with an unknown background, would be afraid to dance in public, or maybe she could not dance at all.

However, Bree did not show her weakness and beg for mercy as Hilda expected. Instead, the young woman flashed a shy smile and nodded in agreement.

Hilda's eyelids trembled as she sneered inwardly.

If anything went wrong, she would not be disgraced anyway.

Thinking so, Hilda let out a smile again.

"I've prepared the dress and jewelry for you. Try them on later. If you're not satisfied with anything, there's still time to make a change."

"Okay."

Throughout the conversation, Bree smiled tenderly and nodded in agreement with whatever Hilda said.

This made Hilda feel somewhat frustrated.

When her eyes fell on Bree's fair wrist, her eyes gleamed.

"Bree, don't you like the bracelet I gave you?"

Hilda's smile deepened as she saw Bree cover her wrist in embarrassment.

"I should have been more considerate. Most girls of your age fancy diamonds but not jade."

"Well, I have several sets of diamond jewelry upstairs. Why don't you select one later? As for that bracelet, since you don't like it..."

"I actually like it a lot, but..." Bree interrupted Hilda and said in a self-condemned tone of voice, "I fell down the other day. Unfortunately, the bracelet got broken."

"It's broken?" The pitch of Hilda's voice rose abruptly.

"It's all my fault for not taking good care of the bracelet..." Bree seemed startled by the sudden rise in Hilda's voice, and tears were welling up in her reddened eyes as she looked at Hilda guiltily.

"That's alright." Hilda took a deep breath and then said through her clenched teeth, "It's just a bracelet. It's okay."
