Chapter 16 Getting Irritated
Trevor was so angry that he clenched his hands into fists, blue veins pounding violently in the backs of his hands.
Leonard gave Trevor a sidelong glance, saying, "You're so easy to get mad. That alone is enough to deprive you of the competence to hold my position. Trevor, you'd better go home and improve your mental health before talking to me again."
"Leonard, pray for yourself. You won't be complacent all the time." Trevor's eyes were filled with hatred.
"And? That's all?" Leonard's patience was wearing thin. He got up and returned to the chair in front of his desk. "You seem to be bored. Why don't you use your energy and time to improve your department's performance?"
With that, Leonard threw a copy of the Development Department's performance appraisal form, which Trevor was in charge of, onto the desk.
Trevor walked over to Leonard's desk and took a look at the document, replying, "Shouldn't you be held accountable that our development department isn't doing well? We bought that piece of land near C University to build a shopping mall or recreation clubs, but you decided to build apartments. Come on, you're clear which of the two options will bring us more interests, aren't you?"
Leonard looked calmly at Trevor, who was furious, and spoke slowly until the room fell into silence, "My subordinate got that piece of land using my personal funds. What does it matter to you what I want to build upon it?"
The most frightening trait about Leonard was not his swift, resolute acting style, but that he always hid his emotions underneath a calm, unruffled expression.
Trevor was visibly stunned and then shocked. "Did you say that you bought that land worth hundreds of millions of yuan next to C University with your own personal funds?"
Leonard glanced at Trevor calmly. "What's so surprising that I can afford hundreds of millions?"
Trevor stared at Leonard with a more shocked look in his eyes.
"There are times when you only see the surface of things." Leonard leaned back in his seat as he looked at the other man with a composed look in his eyes. "Even if I weren't the Bryant Group's president, what I obtained would not be less than what I have now. I'm staying because my last name is Bryant, and I don't want to upset Grandpa."
Trevor looked at Leonard with complicated emotions surging up in his eyes for a good while.
Leonard also looked at Trevor, who had anger deep inside his pupils, and maintained silent.
"We're cousins," Leonard said to Trevor, "But I don't think you ever take me as your cousin."
Trevor kept silent.
"It's common that people in a wealthy and influential family fight against each other." Leonard stared at the framed picture of his grandfather and him on the desk and continued, "I don't want to hurt you, but I would never allow you to do anything to hurt the company."
"Leonard, don't make a big deal out of yourself." Trevor replied in a scornful tone, "I'm telling you, I won't give up any opportunity to get you out of office."
Leonard glanced at Trevor's angry, twisted face and said nothing else.
"One day, Grandpa will approve of me," Trevor said, and instantly, a brighter, glowing smile broke out in his eyes.
Trevor picked up the papers from Leonard's desk, then turned around angrily and left. He suddenly stopped in the doorway and turned back. "By the way, I've brought back some fancy coffee and cookies and put them in the pantry. Try some when you're in a bad mood."
With that, Trevor opened the office door and strode away.
The office immediately fell into silence. Leonard stared at the files on his computer motionlessly.
He had presented this kind of state many times this day.
As the evening was approaching, Leonard thought about taking Ashley back to the old mansion for dinner and felt expectant and uneasy.
In the senior assistants' office, Ashley kept herself busy until the end of the day. As she was about to leave, she noticed that Jacob was still working intently.
Ashley took her bag and asked, "Mr. Dawson, aren't you leaving?"
Jacob looked at Ashley, replying, "You go ahead, I have to work for a while."
For staff in the president's office or in the entire Bryant Group, working overtime was a regular occurrence.
Watching Jacob working overtime, Ashley gave up the idea to leave as she was a new employee and should follow the company's rules like everyone else.
Therefore, she returned to her seat, put down her bag, and opened the folder to continue her work.
After a while, Jacob looked up and was surprised to find Ashley sitting in her seat. "Why are you still here? You are off-duty and can go home now. See you tomorrow at the airport at seven in the morning."
Ashley lifted her head to look at Jacob. "I'm new here. How can I leave while you're still working? Is there anything I can help you with?"
"Not really." Jacob put some documents into a folder, saying, "Don't work overtime on your first day here. If you shrink back or resign because of that, the Human Resources Department will blame me. We have a flight to catch the next morning, so go home and get some rest. I'll see you tomorrow."
Ashley nodded at Jacob's smiling face, replying, "Okay, then. I'll see you tomorrow."
Just as Ashley arrived at the lobby on the first floor by elevator, she received Leonard's call.
"Where are you?" The man asked briefly.
Ashley looked around, answering, "I have left the office and am on the first floor."
"Wait for me in the underground parking lot," As Leonard spoke coldly, he took his jacket, got up from the chair, and walked out of the room, intending to take the elevator to the underground garage.
Debbie immediately greeted Leonard as he came out. "President Bryant, are you going home now? Would you like me to arrange a car for you?"
Leonard walked swiftly with an emotionless expression on his face. "You don't have to follow me. You may go home now."
Debbie paused for a second, saying, "President Bryant, you don't have a schedule tonight, so why don't you..."
Leonard abruptly paused his pace and furrowed his brows slightly. "I don't want my assistant to interfere too much with my life. If you do this again, you won't have to work for me."
Debbie was stunned, then bowed her head. "I'm sorry, I won't make such a silly mistake again."
From beginning to end, Leonard did not spare a glance at Debbie. He strode into the elevator, expecting to see Ashley.
Leonard did not realize that he was starting to care about Ashley.
As the elevator went down, Leonard actually felt somewhat nervous inside.
