Chapter 15 My Surname Is Bryant
Ashley poured herself a glass of juice and then prepared a cup of espresso for Jacob. She suddenly heard people chatting outside on the balcony and heard her own name being mentioned as she was about to return to her office.
"It's hard to describe the new assistant as lucky or unlucky. She was seconded to the senior assistants' office as soon as she joined the company and will be going to A City with the boss tomorrow."
"Fortunately, our boss is gay and not interested in women, so she won't find favor with the boss. Look at Debbie. She is around the boss every day, but nothing has happened between them."
"Yeah. So, we have to move our eyes upon other single executives from other departments so that we can get a chance to change our lives."
"Exactly. We can't waste our youth on the boss anymore."
"Do you think that President Jenkins from the Jenkins Group's is our boss's lover? He comes to the president's office frequently and hangs out with our boss every now and then. They even travel together. That's too intimate, right?"
"Yes, Assistant Dawson as well. He works with President Bryant all day long. Is he also President Bryant's lover? Otherwise, why should he have so much power in the company?"
...
As Ashley listened to the careful yet heated discussion, she could not help but think of the two nights she had spent with Leonard.
Although she was drunk in those two nights, her tiredness the next morning she woke up proved that Leonard was a straight man who was quite good at sex.
Ashley was new to the Bryant Group. She told herself to do more, talk less, and not to get involved in the office partisan battles. Therefore, she did not listen any longer and went back to the office with juice and coffee.
"Assistant Dawson, here's your coffee." Ashley placed the coffee cup in one of the few areas not occupied by the files on Jacob's desk.
"Thank you." Jacob was too busy to even lift his head up.
Witnessing Jacob being busy, Ashley hesitated to say, "Is there anything I can do to help? I've memorized the information you gave me, and I'm free right now."
"Already?" Jacob looked up at Ashley with amazement. "That's very efficient of you!"
Ashley revealed a modest smile. "Those files are imprinted in my head word for word now."
"I didn't expect to have borrowed a genius from the President's Secretariat." Jacob smiled and handed Ashley a document. "You can help me read this file. It's the first draft of a construction plan for one high-end neighborhood. See if there are any problems."
Ashley immediately took the file, returned to her seat, and read it carefully.
"This proposal is quite comprehensive. The location is next to C University?" Ashley was a bit surprised. "I heard long ago that the vacant land next to C University was bought by the Bryant Group. So, it's true."
"President Bryant used to be a student in the department of architecture at C University." Assistant Dawson added with a smile, "You and President Bryant come from the same department of the same university."
Ashley was clear that Leonard used to study at the department of architecture at C University. She memorized almost everything she could find out about her idol. She was so crazy and obsessed that she even suspected that she had been bewitched by him.
"Is President Bryant this project's lead architect?" Ashley asked with curiosity as she flipped through the architectural plan but failed to see the lead architect's name.
Jacob put down the stuff in his hand and took a sip of coffee to refresh himself. At Ashley's question, he let out a smile. "The main architect is still in secrecy, as to whether it is President Bryant or not, no one knows."
"Why keep it a secret?" Ashley was a little confused. "If the lead architect's name is announced in advance, the reputation of these apartments will be spread without promotion. Wouldn't it be great?"
"Maybe President Bryant has his own ideas and arrangements!" Jacob smiled and did not go any further. After all, there were some business secrets involved on this topic.
Ashley nodded slightly and continued to study the design plan.
In the president's office, Leonard was sitting on the couch in a daze.
"It's rare to see President Bryant in such a state, isn't it?" In a white shirt and black suit, the smiling man strode over to the couch opposite Leonard and sat down.
Leonard immediately put on a cold, grave expression and did not even spare a look at the man across from him. "Trevor, you've been coming to my office quite often lately, haven't you? But even if you have a problem with me, I'm still the president of the Bryant Group. My family is the largest shareholder of the Bryant Group, and your Russell Family is behind us."
"President Bryant, don't be so confident. The Bryant Family has to secure the presidency well. You may commit a blunder someone, and I'll become the president instead of you, right?" Trevor Russell leaned back casually on the sofa and smiled. "After all, Grandpa likes me too."
"As much as Grandpa likes you, you're just his daughter's son. You're not going to inherit the Bryant Group." Leonard furrowed his brows slightly, and the look in his eyes was standoffish. "Oh right, I forgot to tell you that your mother suffered an investment failure again recently and embezzled tens of millions of dollars from the company. What do you think Grandpa will do to her if I tell him about these?"
"Leonard, my mother is your aunt and Grandpa's biological daughter!" Trevor's warm, friendly eyes suddenly became frightening.
Leonard sneered. "My aunt, grandpa's biological daughter? Why didn't my beloved aunt tell me that Grandpa was her father when she fought against Grandpa for the Russell Family and almost aggravated Grandpa to death? It's the most I can do to keep your mother in the Bryant Group."
"The Bryant Group is not just yours." Trevor looked optimistic and gentle on the outside. However, he was unconfident and vulnerable deep inside. It was genuinely hard for him, a man with a different surname from Leonard, to make a living in the Bryant Group.
"If the Bryant Group doesn't belong to the Bryant Family, does it belong to the Russell Family?" Leonard argued back with a sneer.
"Leonard." Trevor flew into a rage, pressed his hands against the coffee table before him, and threw himself in front of Leonard, who was sitting on the couch. "Don't be so arrogant."
Leonard laughed lightly. "I have nothing to be arrogant with. No matter how furious you are, it's useless. My surname is Bryant, and that's an unchangeable fact."
