Chapter 10 An Alice-in-Wonderland World

Half an hour later, Nelly appeared in her department.

To her surprise, her colleagues expressed their welcome to her. At the same time, she was shocked by the things that occupied her desk. After watching them for a long while, she asked in confusion, "Why did you put these things on my desk?" Come on! Her desk was not a storeroom!

"Nelly, aren't you surprised at all?" The colleagues were very nervous. Didn't she like their gifts?

To be frank, she was more shocked than surprised.

She looked at her desk in utter doubt. It had usually been piled high with files, but now, they were replaced by things like a storage basket, rose essential oil, a tropical fish toy waving its tail leisurely, a plush cushion, and a vacuum bottle.

She thought she must have traveled into an Alice-in-Wonderland world.

Then, she heard her colleagues say in chorus, "Nelly, sorry for causing you so much trouble recently! Thanks! From now on, you can relax in the company! We'll help you with your work!"

"Well..." she was perplexed. "What's wrong?"

"Let me say it! Let me say it!" Lynne squeezed out from the crowd and said in a friend's tone, "Nelly, come on! Share your good news with us, though we've all known that. Hee..."

"What good news?" Lynne's I-understand smile made Nelly even more confused.

"Jack Ward has been fired. You know that, don't you?"

"He's been fired?" She was startled and then relieved. Benjamin, being the head of scumbags, always had zero tolerance for a scumbag like Jack.

"Yes! So we'll have a new manager. When we learned the news this morning, we bought gifts to celebrate your promotion immediately! If we offended you in the past, please forgive us and give us a chance!"

"Yes, yes, we'll do whatever you tell..."

Soon, she was overwhelmed by sweet talks. While feeling flattered, she grasped the point. "You think I'll take Jack's place?" She would become the head of the department?

"Certainly! Or who else?" they replied in unison.

There was a reason for them to believe so.

According to Jessie, the boss had informed the personnel department to dismiss Jack early in the morning. The point was that this happened so suddenly and he didn't give any explanation as if Jack just deserved the punishment.

Then why? Certainly, it was to clear the obstacles for his woman! This was the only possible explanation!

In the past, they had been unsure about Nelly's position in their boss's heart. But now, they knew it clearly. For an ordinary employee, the boss was willing to sacrifice an experienced manager who had worked hard for the company for ten years.

With the privilege, Nelly could dominate all of them easily. That was an indisputable fact unless the boss also got his eye on them!

So they either gave gifts or flattered her, making the atmosphere as lively as that in the vegetable market.

But facts proved that there was not always the wisdom of crowds.

"Ahem, please be quiet. Here's something..." the manager of the personnel department said. But after a moment, he found all the people were still busy fawning on Nelly. Irritated, he thumped the table and shouted, "Shut up!"

The three or four people on the periphery became quiet at first. Eyes burning with anger, the personnel manager stepped inward to warn a layer after another. Finally, all the people were silent.

He and Nelly sighed with relief at the same time.

"Attention! This is Miss Lee, Faye Lee. She'll be the manager of your department from now on. Let's give warm applause to welcome Miss Lee!" Then, the personnel manager took the lead to applaud.

A dumbfounded silence suddenly fell.

Faye's face was too familiar to the employees in the Longman Group.

All the people's gazes shifted between Nelly and Faye.

One of them was Benjamin's ex-girlfriend, and the other was the current one. When two tigers met, which side should they support to avoid losses?

After seconds of brainstorm, they realized they had complicated the matter.

It was a law of nature and also of the workplace to please the head. What was there to hesitate about?

Therefore, the people around Nelly flocked to Faye. "Miss Lee, you look so gorgeous!" "Miss Lee, please have a seat!" ...

In the blink of an eye, Nelly was left out on her seat.

She was not that surprised at the scene. It was her colleagues whose imagination had run wild at first. How could Benjamin entrust her with such important power? What a daydream!

But something was out of her expectation. Her colleagues smiled apologetically to her before taking away the gifts one after another. Then, right before her, they put the gifts on Faye's desk.

That was too much!

Nelly shook her head, but she didn't bother to get angry.

At lunchtime, Nelly had to stay because she was on duty today. But Lynne said she would bring packed lunch to her, which moved her greatly.

Just then, a voice was heard from above her, "Miss Jones?"

"Huh? Miss Ward, What can I help you?" Nelly asked.

"Mr. Longman asked you to go to the convenience store downstairs to buy two Durexes. Here's a tip — he wants the biggest size."

After saying that in a professional tone, Jessie left gracefully, leaving Nelly alone in astonishment.

Wait... What did he want her to buy?

She opened her eyes wide as if she had swallowed a fly.
