Chapter 9 Kay's Bedroom
All this way, Benjamin had glanced at Nelly many times through the driving mirror. She seemed to be asleep with her eyelids drooping. But he knew she was having a storm in her mind.
Facing her silence, he brushed his hair and began to feel irritable. If that wasn't the only road home, he might have lost her tonight.
If she had really been taken away by that lecher... Fists clenched, he realized that he hated to think about it further!
He gave a nod to Luke Ward who, after following him for many years, got his meaning at once. Then, the car went in the opposite direction of the Longman's.
Right Bank Villa.
Located in one of the prime locations in City A, it had convenient transportation, complete facilities, and the scenery of hills and lakes. Getting off the car, Nelly was in a trance.
This was the house for Benjamin and Kay.
Nelly had once seen the advertising slogan for Right Bank Villa on television: If you want to pick a gift for your love, Right Bank Villa will be your perfect choice!
By then, Key had been standing next to her with a bright smile. Her face alight with happiness had been telling Nelly that Benjamin had given her the most valuable villa.
"Why are you standing there? Come in!"
Benjamin looked around and found Nelly was absent-minded.
It was as if her gaze had penetrated his body to somewhere else. It was as if he was a transparent existence in front of her!
He felt displeased by the thought. "Aren't you all right now? Who are you showing your sad face?"
She ignored his words and walked into the house like a ghost.
He caught up and tried to attract her attention to himself. "Nelly, you haven't taken off your shoes! Where's your upbringing?"
"Upbringing?" She felt both a headache and a heartache when he yelled. Why was he so mean even when she was in such a bad mood? "When you went to my house, why didn't you talk about your ridiculous upbringing? Oh! Was it because your shoes were expensive? Or was it actually because you had beriberi?"
Hearing that, he had his nose out of joint!
"Nelly, how dare you talk to me like that? Oh yes, if I hadn't appeared in time, you might have been carried away and been at the mercy of that lecher!"
Although he was right, she thought the harm he had caused was more than the help he had offered. So she fell into a sullen silence.
Obtaining no gratitude from her, he began to get angry. He tried to argue with her, but she didn't look at him and unscrewed the knob of the closest room. When she wanted to hide inside it, she was surprised by the room's decoration. In front of the huge French window, the gauze curtains with floral patterns hung straight down gracefully. The photos of all sizes covered the walls, showing various vivid expressions of a pretty woman.
Owning to the wind produced by the door, a picture flew across Nelly's eyes, showing a face that she wouldn't forget all her life: Kay Jones!
Without any signs, she was dragged out of the room by Benjamin. She heard his voice that suddenly turned cold, "You don't deserve to enter Kay's bedroom."
Nelly's spirits were dampened. She looked at his furious back and said, "Then you shouldn't have taken me to your love nest."
He swallowed at a loss, not knowing why he had taken her here. Perhaps, compared with the lifeless mansion of his family, Right Bank Villa was more like a cozy home.
But as he looked up, the smiling woman on the photos seemed to be questioning him, "Benjamin, don't you know who robbed me of my smiles? Why are you with her?"
Slowly, he closed his eyes. When he opened his eyes again, he looked more than cold and resolute. "You're right. I regret it now. Perhaps it was a mistake to save you tonight. I should have watched that man drag you onto the car. As such, you can somehow pay the debt you owed to Kay."
After saying that, he kicked the door shut, leaving Nelly alone outside.
A trace of sadness flashed across her face. After a while, she revealed a self-mockery smile, thinking, "Benjamin, if it's your nature to be so cruel, please keep it up. This way, I can stop myself from sinking into your occasional tenderness."
When she woke up in the villa, it was time to go to work. Last night, to avoid provoking him, she had slept on the sofa rather than exploring other rooms.
Benjamin seemed still angry with her. This petty man didn't drive her to the company, and instead, he asked Luke to honk loudly when she went out.
Carrying his cool face, the car swooshed past her. Under the sunlight, she saw a lot of dust flying around her. He did it on purpose!
Why was this man so childish? Did he think he was still a little boy?
She touched her empty belly and took a taxi to the Longman Group. On the road, she asked the driver to drive slowly because she didn't want to reach the company at the same time with him.
She was forced to be so cautious, or the gossips about her would increase exponentially in the company.
