Chapter 20 Misfortune Never Came Singly

When Chloe got out of the police station, her eyes were misty. She knew that a man like Esteban was not worth her tears, but everyone had emotions.

"Chloe?" Someone suddenly called out from behind.

Chloe stiffened and quickly recognized the voice.

With the back of her hand, she wiped the moisture off the corners of her eyes. When she turned back, she managed to smile, "Mr. McNeil, I'm sorry for causing trouble to the store."

Soren frowned at her smeared makeup.

After quite a while, he replied, "I've learned everything. It's not your fault."

Soren's image as a righteous man grew strong in her mind. Today he was her savior. If he didn't show up, she might have been put into prison for theft and got beaten by her ex-boyfriend and the mistress.

Full of gratitude, Chloe bowed to him respectfully, "Mr. McNeil, thank you very much for your help!"

The corners of his lips curved up slightly, "As a living person, I'll just accept one bow."

Chloe tittered to hear that.

Last time she carelessly held a farewell ceremony. It was still fresh in her memory.

Dazed by her smile, Soren suddenly took one step forward and reached out his hand. Then his finger touched her left cheek.

As she stared at the man, her heart started racing uncontrollably.

His finger stroked the mole for seconds before she came to her senses. In a hurry, she took one step back, saying in a panic, "Mr. McNeil, I should go back to the store!"

Then she took off.

Soren put his hands in his trouser pockets. His deep eyes watched as she disappeared into the night.

Chloe stumbled along the way. The affair between Esteban and Ashley messed with her head while Soren's action stirred her heart.

She didn't know why, but her mind was filled with Soren's dashing face.

Ding a ling... ding a ling...

When she almost reached the store, her cell phone suddenly rang!

"Chloe, mom fainted, come to Benevolence Hospital quickly!" As soon as the line was through, the sobbing voice of her little brother, Maxton Hurley, came from the other end.

A stupefied Chloe responded immediately, "I'm on my way!"

When she reached the hospital, her mother had been sent to an intensive care unit.

"Why did Mom suddenly faint?" Chloe grabbed her brother and asked anxiously.

"Well..." Maxton hesitated.

"Come on!" Chloe urged him.

"Mom has a serious kidney disease and needs renal transplantation, or her life will be in danger." Maxton answered, knitting his brows.

"When? Why didn't you tell me earlier?" Chloe asked in shock.

"A month ago, the doctor said Mom had renal failure. The transplantation and treatment will cost at least 1.2 million yuan. According to Mom, even if we sell everything, we can't raise enough money. She forbade me to tell you and waited for death..." At that point, Maxton burst into tears.

Chloe was petrified!

Renal failure? Transplantation? How could this happen? 1.2 million? All their family belongings were not even worth a fraction of it.

A tearful Maxton shook the arm of his dazed sister, saying, "Chloe, the doctor just told me that as long as either of us matches her type and donates a kidney, the medical fee could be reduced by half!"

Chloe anxiously grabbed his hand, "This is my duty. I'll find the doctor and do a matching test right away!"

Maxton was born with cerebral palsy. Luckily, his intelligence was fine, but his body was uncoordinated. When he walked, he hobbled. She didn't have the heart to see him losing a kidney.

"Chloe, I'm going with you..." Maxton proposed.

Daunted by her stern gaze, he stopped halfway through his speech. His sister loved him dearly, but he was also afraid of her. He didn't dare to defy her.

"Stay here with Mom!" Chloe walked off.

Half an hour later, she received the test result. If she didn't support herself with the wall, she should have collapsed on the floor.

To her dismay, she was not a match. Worse still, she was pregnant.

She looked helplessly and blankly at the test report. She had been pregnant for five weeks.
