Chapter 17 Inexcusable
The joy from Soren's decision to keep the store overcame the disgust brought by Esteban. Back in the store, when people heard the good news, they jumped for joy and admired the new store manager. The only silent person was Ashley.
A few days later, Chloe was receiving customers when a shopping assistant suddenly exclaimed.
"Mrs. Terrell's ring is gone. Did anyone see it?"
Chloe immediately walked to a noblewoman in her fifties and asked with a smile, "Mrs. Terrell, what happened?"
"I washed my hands in the bathroom and left my ring on the sink. When I went back, it was gone! I'm fine if it were an ordinary ring, but it's a gift from my husband on our 30th wedding anniversary. It would be a shame if I lost it!" The old lady replied anxiously.
"Mrs. Terrell, don't worry, nothing will be lost in our store. We'll help you retrieve it right away." Chloe immediately called on everyone to look around.
15 minutes later, they had scoured the place but failed to find the ring.
Mrs. Terrell's patience had been worn thin, "Ms. Hurley, according to you, nothing will be lost in your store, but I remember clearly that I left it on the sink. Besides, I'm the only customer. How will you explain this?"
Chloe was so anxious that her head was covered with sweat. "Mrs. Terrell, don't worry, your ring will not be lost!" She had to reassure the old lady first.
"But it is lost." Mrs. Terrell said regretfully.
"Yeah, the ring was on the sink. Would it run away itself?" Ashley said in a voice dripping with sarcasm.
"What do you mean?" Mrs. Terrell turned to her and asked.
"Mrs. Terrell, isn't it obvious? Someone took it." Ashley glanced at Chloe and continued, "In my opinion, everyone stays where she is, and we call the police for a thorough search. In so doing, I believe the ring will be found!"
Mrs. Terrell immediately nodded in agreement, and Ashley quickly made the call. Chloe frowned because it would damage the reputation of their store. However, the ring Mrs. Terrell lost was valuable, and there were no other feasible ways.
The police soon arrived, inquired about the situation, and began to frisk everyone at Ashley's suggestion.
Except for Chloe's locker, people's lockers and handbags had been examined, but the ring was still not found.
Just then, Ashley came up and sneered, "Officer, this is our store manager's locker. It's impossible that she would steal from a customer, so there is no need to check it, right?"
"Please step away, do not obstruct us." Two policemen warned her sternly.
Ashley sensibly stepped aside. Chloe silently came up and opened her locker.
The two policemen checked it carefully. One of them felt something suspicious, winked at his partner, walked to Mrs. Terrell with a glittering diamond ring between his fingers, and asked, "I wonder if this is the ring you lost."
Mrs. Terrell took the ring in surprise. "Yes, yes, this is my ring!"
Chloe was confounded!
"How... impossible! Why is her ring in my locker?" Her heart was racing and fluttering.
"Ask yourself." The policeman said with a stern face.
"How dare you blatantly steal from your customer! Empress Luxury is really disappointing!" Mrs. Terrell put the ring back on and showed a disdainful face.
Before Chloe could figure out what was going on, a policeman came up, "Chloe, right? Please come with us."
Ivory stepped out to explain, "Officer, Chloe would never steal from a customer. This must be a mistake!"
"Mistake or not, she should explain it at the police station." Ashley gloated.
Chloe knew this was a setup but found it inexcusable since the ring was found in her locker.
She turned to her friend, "Ivory, tend the store, I'll be back soon."
"Chloe, you didn't steal anything. You don't have to go to the police station!" Ivory grabbed her hand and reasoned.
"A clean hand wants no washing. I believe the officers will clear my name." Chloe comforted her friend.
