Chapter 21 Making a Show of Herself

It was then that steamed crabs were served.

It was the first time that Zoey had seen crabs of such a size, so she was impressed.

There were the two young women opposite Zoey chatting in a whisper. Suddenly the woman in green said,

"Grandmother, there are so many young members here. Let us serve you to show our filial piety."

Zoey thought that the woman wanted to please Mrs. Kingsley when the latter suddenly pointed to her. "Grandmother, now that Zoey is so filial, why not let her shell crabs for you?"

At her words, Mrs. Kingsley beamed with delight. "Cherry, Good advice."

The crab in front of Mrs. Kingsley was the largest. Cheery Wood had the waiter put it before Zoey, along with a plate of silver utensils so sophisticated that Zoey had no idea how to use it.

Zoey looked over at Cherry and perceived a hint of conspiracy in her smile.

It struck Charlie quickly that Zoey did not know how to use the special utensils at all. After the thought of her background, the others also understood why Zoey was motionless.

There was mock, disdain, and pity in the eyes of the crowd.

It was at the moment that Zoey was keenly aware of the vast gap between classes.

Zoey had never seen the eight silver utensils, so she was naturally unclear how to use them. But if she shelled the crabs with her hands, it would make her like a barbarian.

They were waiting to see her losing face.

Seeing her grandson's worried gaze, Mrs. Kingsley knew that she had done something wrong.

"Let me help you."

To save Zoey from the dilemma, Charlie was about to ask the waiter to switch the plates when Cherry said, "Charlie, Miss Carter wants to show her filial piety. How can you prevent her?

Miss Carter, am I right?"

Cherry's words put Zoey in a predicament.

Zoey said with an apologetic smile, "Sorry, grandma, I never see these utensils before, let alone using them."

She frankly admitted that.

Zoey's openness and fearlessness amused charlie.

To protect Zoey's dignity, Mrs. Kingley echoed, "It doesn't matter. Let Charlie shell it for me. He's good at it."

Cherry muttered, "You're so useless that you even do not know how to shell a crab."

Zoey did not mind that others mocked her, but she did not want to make Charlie lose face because of her. She said with a smile,

"Grandma, indeed, I don't know how to use these utensils, but it does not mean that I do not know how to shell a crab."

"Show us," Cherry added.

Those of the upper class who thought themselves superior invented these complicated utensils to avoid making themselves like barbarians when eating crabs.

It would disappoint people who wanted to see her embarrassed.

With one hand holding the big crab, Zoey grinned and said, "There is a much easier way to shell a crab. No need to use these complicated utensils. Grandma, I'll show you how to do that with my bare hands."

At the sight of Zoey's confident look, Mrs. Kingsley sighed with relief and nodded. "Okay, I'm waiting. If you have trouble, let Charlie give you a hand.

Mrs. Kingsley reminded Charlie in case that Zoey failed.

After casting a glance at the crowd, Zoey began to show her skills.

Her hometown was by the sea, and there was a wide river not far from her house. When her parents argued about divorce in the old days, her father stopped sending money to her grandma, who raised her then. Later, as they almost ran out of food, they had to catch hairy crabs in the river.

Much smaller than the one in her hand, the hairy crab had little meat, so Zoey had to learn skills to keep the meat as much as possible.
