Chapter 12 What Trick Was This?
"The kid is suffering from trauma and afraid of meeting people! So, you're Kelly's father, James."
"Yes, Mr. Kent!" James stretched out his arm and shook hands firmly with Chapman, "Thank you for saving my child. If it wasn't for you, she might have been..."
James choked with sobs.
"As fate would have it, I went to the wharf for business the other day and saw a girl struggling in the river on such a cold day. Her body was sinking and her life at stake. Therefore, I asked my men to fish her up, only to find her already unconscious. I planned to take her home and send her back when she woke up. Unexpectedly, she had a fright and lost part of her memories. In fear, she has been hiding in the room all day. For fear of any misfortune during her trip, I had to call you and ask you to pick her up."
"Kelly, do you still remember how you fell into the river?" Rose tried to sound her out.
Was she afraid that her scheme would be exposed?
Kelly kept her head low, but coldness was rampant in her dark eyes.
Should Rose, an unscrupulous evildoer, know fear?
What then?
Your good days were coming to an end!
Kelly raised her head hesitantly, took a timid glance at James and Rose, and then slightly shook her head.
Rose heaved a sigh of relief.
Suddenly, Kelly held her head painfully with both hands and screamed uncomfortably, "Ah... ah..."
"Okay, kid, it's okay, don't force yourself!" Chapman turned around, held her in his arms, stroked her back gently, and soothed her in a low voice.
James hadn't expected Chapman to love Kelly so dearly.
"My child is blessed to receive so much care from you, Mr. Kent."
"Certainly, she will soon become my grandson-in-law, so I certainly should treat her well."
"What?"
"What?"
Two voices came out at the same time. James's eyes were full of shock, but there was more anger than shock in Rose's eyes.
She had racked her brains to come up with plans of bringing Abby and David together.
Not in her wildest dreams had she expected the village girl to beat her in her own game!
She got mixed feelings and felt upset.
But she didn't show it on the surface.
Rose, tormenting, wasn't it?
The corner of Kelly's mouth curved up imperceptibly.
Just then, Rose stuck her hand in her handbag, took out a handkerchief, and pressed it against the corners of her eyes, "The pain and rain are gone! I'm so happy for her."
Kelly's eyes darkened. What trick was this?
She stood there, waiting for Rose's drama, "This kid has a hard life. Her mother deceased during her birth, and her grandfather passed away a month later. She finally grows up, but one week ago, her grandmother also... You see, life has been hard on her, and we seniors feel so sad for her!"
"Now you and David love her dearly. I think her loves ones in heaven will be relieved to hear the news."
Was she implying that Kelly was a curse to her loved ones?
Kelly almost laughed over anger.
She hadn't expected Rose to be so good at calling the white black.
