Chapter 8 Take Me Away
When it was time to get off work, Nelly sighed with relief and rose, ready to say goodbye to Lynne. But Lynne took her arm immediately and clung to her like a shadow. "Nelly, there's no hurry. We have a party tonight. Come and join us!"
"Me? I'm afraid I..." When Nelly wanted to decline with an excuse of something at home, a cold voice interrupted her at once, "If you have no interest in a party without nepotism, just say so. Why bother to find an excuse that can't even fool a three-year-old kid?"
Nelly recognized the voice's owner at once. It was reasonable for Jasmine to be so unfriendly to her. She had just lost face in front of her group members and hadn't got over it.
As such, it would be too rude to reject the invitation. So Nelly smiled habitually and said, "All right."
The party was held in an inexpensive restaurant bar. After paying a certain sum respectively, they were guided into the biggest room.
Somehow, Nelly was arranged to sit next to Jack Ward. "Nelly, drink some with me," he said enthusiastically.
She wasn't interested in alcohol. Besides, Jack's lecherous gaze on her gave her a stronger impulse to vomit than drinking.
Sitting across the table, Jasmine had all his behaviors in sight. Deliberately, she walked around the table to fill Nelly's glass with liquor and said to Jack in a meaningful tone, "Mr. Ward, why are you looking at Nelly like this? Is there a beautiful flower on her face?"
Forced by Jasmine, Nelly drank the liquor and had a pink flush spreading over her cheeks. Seeing that, Jack couldn't resist his lust and gulped the liquor down, but it seemed to have lost its original flavor. He murmured, "She's more beautiful than a flower."
"Sure, Nelly is prettier than a flower!" To please the leader, those quick-minded began praising Nelly from all possible angles.
Busy responding to the compliments, Nelly began to regret joining the party which was ostensibly joyous but in fact treacherous.
Not only did she sit next to the lecherous manager under Jasmine's deliberate arrangement, but also she had to drink all the liquor poured by him to show respect.
After a night of fun, they left the restaurant bar and went home by taxi. It was an autumn night. As the cold wind blew, many smiling faces were stiffened slightly.
As for Nelly, she was squatting in a corner and retching. She felt so bad that she couldn't even stand up straight. Dizzy and cold, she only wanted to find a warm place to have a rest.
While she was still holding her chest to relieve her discomfort, the colleagues, including those living near her, had gone home by tacit agreement. The only things left for her were a drunk man and his heavy breath of alcohol.
"Nelly... let me drive you back!"
With a greedy look, he couldn't wait to talk to her and pull her toward the taxi. The next second, he cupped her face with his trembling hands!
She bounced off right away! In the driver's urging voice, she pulled Jack's sparse hair desperately to break free. As he growled, she turned around and left at once!
In a panic, she ran into a bossy yet familiar embrace.
"What are you doing here?" His expression was cold, but his hands that supported her were warm.
Gazing at the man for a while, she suddenly felt safe and also scared of what had happened. She grasped his coat tightly and begged, "Benjamin, take me away! Please..."
Jack opened his eyes wide and used all his strength to stop himself from trembling. "M-Mr. Longman!"
Benjamin's stare then fell on Jack. He smelt the alcohol on her and then spotted the fear in Jack's eyes. Aware of what had happened, he said coldly, "I remember Mr. Ward has a wife? Or do I remember it incorrectly?"
"No, that's right. It's my fault! It's all my fault..." Jack's head hadn't been utterly spoiled by liquor and saved a sense of propriety for him. Although it was too late, he still forced an ingratiating smile. "Mr. Longman, I just wanted to drive Nelly home. She's drunk and can't identify the road home."
"It's more important to recognize a man than the road." With an eyebrow raised, Benjamin gave a meaningful stare at the regretful man. As if to claim ownership, he carried Nelly by his arms and got her into his private car.
