Chapter 16 You Cannot Sleep with Him
Edward Pike was standing underneath the boxing ring and looking up at Stephen Sidney, who was already on the arena, and sneered softly, "Stephen Sidney, don't behave as if I have taken your wife away from you. She is your sister!"
Stephen's eyes were cold, even eerie. The buttons of his snow-white shirt had initially been fully buttoned, and the collar wrapped tightly around his neck.
Now he reached up and unbuttoned the top two buttons.
Then he slowly rolled up the sleeves and put on his boxing gloves.
"Eighteen minutes left." Stephen stared at Edward throughout, not taking his eyes off of him for even a second.
"Well." Hearing the man's time cue, Edward also slipped on his gloves and stepped onto the ring with a confident stride.
The moment Edward stepped onto the arena, Stephen swung his fist at the former's head. Edward swiftly ducked out of the way of the man's attack and then threw his right fist into Stephen's waist!
Stephen took a violent step backward and immediately spun back to kick Edward.
He was an authoritative doctor specializing in the functions and structures of the human body, with a developed and flexible mind. Each of his attacks on Edward was based on the ability of the body's organs to withstand, without wasting a single ounce of unnecessary force.
However, Edward was very patient and dodged all of the attacks. Only when he could not avoid one did he choose to fight back.
"Why have you chosen Jane?" Stephen's fist was targeting Edward's chin. The latter blocked the hit with his hands and then clasped both of Stephen's fists.
The two men's eyes met, the look in one's was fierce and the other's deep.
"By accident," Edward replied in a flat tone.
"By accident?!" Stephen flew into a rage and landed a side kick to Edward's lower body. Edward immediately loosened his grip on him and reared back a few steps.
Stephen then saw the opportunity to kick Edward again. "I don't know what you're thinking, but if you dare to hurt Jane, I'm going to kill you!"
Edward frowned at his opponent's incoming fist but deliberately did not dodge it.
Bang!
Edward got kicked down upon the arena by Stephen, and even the attacker was somewhat startled.
"Why did Edward Pike suddenly stop moving instead of ducking?"
With his eyes narrowed, Stephen looked at Edward closely. The next second, he suddenly realized something and shouted, "Edward Pike!" While speaking, he grabbed the man by his lapels and wanted to hit him one more time.
This time, Edward swiftly blocked the attacker's fist with his right hand, and then looked up slowly. The look in his eyes was no longer deep as it was earlier. Instead, it was gloomy and fierce.
"That's enough," Edward said coldly.
Stephen furrowed his thick brows and tried to punch the man. However, Edward dodged his fist and kicked him away.
Bang!
Stephen fell heavily to the ground. As he lifted his head and wanted to get up, he saw Edward standing in front of him.
"I'm not going to do anything to her, as long as she plays her part well. And I won't hurt her." Edward said in an emotionless tone, turning around, taking off his gloves and throwing them upon the arena.
"Find another woman!" Stephen yelled.
"No way," Edward stopped and added, "From the moment she was videotaped by King-Se, she was destined to be chosen by me."
"It was King-Se who hijacked that plane?" Stephen's face turned pale instantly.
King-Se was a notorious terrorist organization, whose activities involved human trafficking, body bombs, drug trafficking, and all the other manners of crimes.
Stephen then realized that the hijacking of that plane, which happened days ago, was not that simple. It had been downplayed by the Viaduct City government to avoid amplifying the negative impact, so Stephen did not know what exactly happened at that time, let alone that it was King-Se who should be held accountable for it.
Jane's appearance was recorded by King-Se, which meant that her information has been released to the entire world and entered the information system of the terrorist organization!
"Why didn't you tell me about this earlier!" Stephen, ignoring the pain in his back, stepped out of the ring and stared at Edward's back.
"I had no idea how annoying and childish you are!" Edward turned to give Stephen a cold glance and then continued to stride away. "If you don't want Jane's daily life to be affected, don't overthink it."
Learning that the reason why Edward had chosen Jane to marry was to protect her, Stephen could not help but feel agitated.
In fact, only someone with Edward's strength and background could protect the woman.
"But why was King-Se on that plane? Was it just a coincidence?"
"Stephen! Stephen!" When Stephen heard his sister's cry from outside, he quickly took off his gloves, grabbed his belongings, and walked out, "Jane! I am here."
"Stephen!" Jane then saw her brother, who seemed to be in a much better mood, though his hair was a bit messy and his clothes were a bit rumpled. She then ran forward to apologize, "I'm sorry."
"It's okay. Let's go home." Stephen stared at Jane and reached out to rub her head, "I'm the one who should apologize. I shouldn't have been mad at you."
Jane shook her head while looking at her brother and then tilted her head to watch the empty boxing gym.
Stephen laughed softly, then took Jane's hand and left the area, implying to the other that he had just been alone in the gym venting his anger, so she had nothing to worry about.
It seemed to the woman that Stephen had returned to his usual self. When they arrived home, the man hurried to heat the food for her as if nothing had happened. Somehow, his performance made Jane a little apprehensive.
At the dinner table, Stephen calmly said to Jane, "I agree that you should move in with Edward Pike, but whatever happens, keep me informed."
Jane had not expected her brother to agree to that proposal.
"And," Stephen added with a serious expression, "keep your distance from him. Although you will be living in the same house, you shall not sleep with him until you two are truly in love!"
Jane's face was flushed, and she could not even look Stephen in the eye.
Even though the man was her brother, Jane still found the words too embarrassing.
"Promise me!" Stephen frowned tightly in an instant.
"I promise! No worries!" Jane nodded gravely.
The next morning, as Jane was ready to leave for work, she was surprised to find that Stephen, who usually left the house early, was still at home.
"I'll take you to work today," he said.
Then he came to learn that Jane's electric bike was lost and assumed that it should have something to do with Edward.
On the way to school, the expression on Stephen's face was sullen. However, when he was dropping his sister off at the gate of the school, he tamped down the annoyance, looked at Jane affectionately, and kindly told the woman that he would come to pick her up when the classes were over in the afternoon.
"That man in white was so handsome!"
"He is taking Miss. Sidney to school. What's his relationship with Miss. Sidney?"
After witnessing Stephen's car leave, Jane heard some onlookers' comments.
She turned to see some teachers and students, who were also staring in the direction her brother's car was leaving.
"Miss Sidney, good morning." Jane then heard a voice sounded from her behind.
She turned around and saw that it was her student, Betty Smith.
Jane walked over to the girl, who had a bouquet of carnations in her hand, and greeted back, "Good morning, Betty."
"Miss Sidney, these flowers are for you. Thank you for protecting me on that day." Betty smiled at the woman.
"Thank you. That's very kind of you," Jane gladly accepted the bouquet and then said softly, "They're beautiful. Come on, let's go to the classroom."
"Miss Sidney. My father wants to take you out to dinner and express his gratitude face to face." While walking, Betty extended the invitation to Jane for her dad.
