Chapter 15 To Live Together with Him
Jane Sidney had followed Stephen Sidney out half an hour ago and thought she could get a ride home right away, but unexpectedly, something went wrong with her brother's car.
Stephen took a pair of flats and a jacket out of the car, told his sister to change into them, and then left her to rest in the car while he was fixing the vehicle.
Suddenly, Jane sneezed. She thought to herself, "Is someone cursing me?"
Stephen pulled the sleeves of his shirt up high and looked at Jane with a favored look in his eyes, replying, "Sorry, be patient and wait for another while. The car should be fixed soon."
"Okay." Jane nodded.
Stephen then lowered his head to continue fixing the vehicle while proposing a question, "What's going on between you and Edward Pike? When did you two start dating?"
Stephen had always taken meticulous care of Jane. It was no exaggeration to say that he knew everything about her, including her menstrual period. However, before his sister told him that she was marrying Edward, he had not a clue about the relationship between the two, and he was, therefore, more than a little confused.
After waiting for a while, Stephen still did not get a reply from Jane. He then looked up at the girl.
It turned out that Jane had fallen asleep. In the man's loving eyes, his sleeping sister looked innocent and adorable.
He stared at Jane for quite a moment, and finally, with a light sigh, he dropped his eyes.
"If only she weren't my biological sister."
Stephen shook his head in sorrow and continued working on the car.
When he finally got the car fixed, Stephen got back into the car, adjusted the jacket over Jane for fear that she might catch a cold, and sat down in front of the steering wheel.
Not wanting to wake up the sleeping Jane, Stephen drove carefully.
Time passed. The ringing of her cell phone suddenly awakened Jane.
She quickly took out the device and saw that the incoming number was an unfamiliar one.
Jane was an elementary school teacher who got calls from students or their parents from time to time, so she took the call without hesitation and said, "Hello?"
"Is that Miss Sidney, please?" Sean Richard, who was on the other end of the line, asked politely and then introduced himself, "I'm Edward's assistant, Sean Richard. We've met before."
"Hi, Sean. What can I do for you?" Jane found Sean to be a much more approachable person than Edward Pike.
"Here is the thing. My boss has just bought a manor. When will you be free? Could you please come to have a look at it?"
"To see his manor? I don't think his estate has anything to do with me." Jane rubbed her eyes, only then realizing she was in her own bedroom bed and guessed that Stephen had carried her when she was in sleep from the car back to the room.
"Well." Sean trailed off, looking at the large Ashfran Manor and thinking about how he could convince Jane to move in here.
Sean withdrew his wandering thoughts and decided to tell the truth, "My boss has bought this manor specifically for you, Miss Sidney, and he wants you to move in here."
Jane was surprised and immediately sobered up. She could not believe that Edward had bought a manor for her.
"Huh? I don't need an estate. I have a place to live." She hurried to refuse.
"Miss Sidney, no, Mrs. Pike, you've gotten married to my boss." Sean said in a low, irresistible tone of voice, "We'll come to pick you up the day after tomorrow. See you then." He then hung up without waiting for Jane to reply.
Jane was so overwhelmed that she forgot to move the cell phone away from her ear. While recalling the contents of the marriage agreement she and Edward had signed, she thought to herself, "What should I do? Shall I move into the manor Edward Pike has bought?"
"Jane," Stephen suddenly called out.
In shock, Jane's hand loosened its grip on the phone. Luckily, Stephen was quick enough to catch the device before it fell on the floor.
"What's wrong?" Stephen asked in a soft, mellow voice, placing the woman's phone on the table beside before crouching down in front of her bed and looking up at her.
He stared at Jane, one hand on the edge of the bed, and then, with the other hand, he naturally and intimately lifted the bangs on Jane's face covering her eyes.
The only light source in the room at this point was a dim lamp. But Jane could see the brilliance in Stephen's eyes.
"Stephen. Edward Pike and I are married, so I'm moving to live together with him," Jane stammered, having butterflies in her stomach.
In an instant, the brilliance in Stephen's eyes disappeared.
His hand stroking Jane's bangs stalled in mid-air.
The room was eerily quiet, and Jane was panicking. She knew that Stephen had always cared for her meticulously, and in fact, that was precisely the reason why she basically had no ability to survive on her own.
However, she feared that if she disobeyed Edward's will, the man would withdraw all the funds supporting Stephen's research.
Stephen felt that someone had cut his heart into bits. He thought he had been able to and had to accept the fact that Jane had married Edward, but he still found himself unable even to stand up the idea of her living together with that man.
"No way!" Stephen replied fiercely, rising to his feet. He glared at the woman, being tall and imposing, "Your wedding hasn't been held yet. You cannot live with him. Absolutely not!"
With that, Stephen walked out of the room.
Jane stared blankly at Stephen's departing back.
As far as she could remember, her brother had never lost his temper. No matter what, he always had a smile on his face, as if he loved everything in life.
"He performed differently today!"
The sudden, loud sound of the door slamming shut made Jane shudder all over.
"Is Stephen going out?"
Jane hurried out of bed, straightened her clothes, and walked out of the bedroom.
The living room was still spotlessly clean. There was a hot, delicious meal on the table in the dining hall.
Jane immediately went back to her room, picked up her cell phone and dialed Stephen's number, but the voice coming from the other end of the line said, "The number you have dialed is busy, please redial later."
A white Audi sped down the highway. Inside the car, Stephen was staring ahead, wearing Bluetooth earphones, stepping on the accelerator hard, and speeding the vehicle up.
"What is the matter?" The call came through, and a deep voice came from the other end.
"Come to the Crown Royal Club's Boxing Gym right away. I'll meet you there." Stephen's voice was cold, and he hung up after these words.
The man on the other end of the line snorted softly, put the phone aside, got up, went to the wine cabinet, took out a bottle of 1982 Chateau Lafite Rothschild, poured some of the wine into a tall glass, and then headed for the balcony.
Looking at the distant sky, the look in his obsidian-like eyes became colder and deeper.
The next second, the man drained the glass of red wine, then turned and walked downstairs.
Ten minutes later.
Stephen was sitting on the lounge area of the boxing gym of the Crown Royal Club, his hawk-like eyes fixing deadly on the direction of the doorway.
Finally, the light coming from the doorway was obscured by a tall figure, and the man Stephen was waiting for appeared and approached him with a steady stride.
Stephen rose to his feet and threw two boxing gloves at the man, who caught them steadily.
"Twenty minutes. If you cannot knock me to the ground in twenty minutes, you will divorce Jane immediately!" Stephen shot an icy glance at Edward, grabbed one rope, and easily jumped onto the boxing ring.
