Chapter 17 Who Is that Man?

"Betty Smith's father wants to take me out to dinner?" Jane Sidney pondered for a while, then smiled at Betty and said, "Thank you for the invitation. However, I've been busy these days."

Betty pursed her lips in disappointment and then looked up at Jane, "Okay then. I'll let my dad know."

Jane smiled and nodded. She did not really want to recall what had happened that day on the plane. Without the help of Edward Pike and Sean Richard, she would not have been able to save Betty, and the fact that she and Betty did not get hurt during that accident was already the best fortune for her.

In the afternoon, Jane returned to her office after all the classes, and as she finished packing up and got up to leave, she saw Betty standing furtively at the door and looking cautiously into the office.

"Betty?" Jane said in a soft voice.

"Miss Sidney," Betty entered the room shyly and kept her head down, "My dad insisted on taking you out to dinner."

Helplessly, Jane had to lift her wrist to check the time and then decided to meet Betty's dad for a quick chat before Stephen came to pick her up.

"Where's your father?"

"He's right at the school gate." At Jane's question, Betty looked up at her excitedly, her eyes glowing.

"Let's go." Jane turned to grab her bag and some documents and walked with Betty towards the entrance of the school.

In a parked silver Maserati not far from the school gate, the man in the back seat watched the flow of people with a lit cigarette in his right hand, smoke filling the car.

When Betty and Jane stepped out of the school and saw the car, the little girl excitedly rushed over to it, shouting, "Daddy!"

Looking at the car, Jane immediately had a general idea of Betty's family's economic situation.

She walked towards the vehicle and stopped a few meters away from it, carrying her bag and holding the documents in her arms.

At that moment, the chauffeur got out of the car, walked over to open the door for the man, and then respectfully took Betty's bag.

The man in the car stretched out his long legs, his black shoes shiny, and then his upper body peeked out of the car as well. A man in a blue shirt and black suit pants stepped out of the vehicle.

He was in his early thirties, angular, somewhat thin, looking gentle and cultured, and wore rimless glasses. He had a mole on the corner of his mouth, a beauty mark on a man's face.

"Daddy," called Betty sweetly.

The man gave Betty a gentle glance, then looked up at Jane, not far away, and asked, "Is that Miss Sidney?"

Betty nodded hard.

Jane bowed slightly and greeted politely, "Hello, I'm Betty's math teacher, Jane Sidney."

"I'm Jack Smith," While speaking, Jack extended his right hand but immediately took it back.

Jane knew that the man wanted to shake her hand as a sign of respect and gratitude but was hampered by the fact that she was a woman, so he had withdrawn his hand.

Jane then offered her right hand, "Mr. Smith, nice to meet you."

Jack smiled and reached out his hand to gently shake Jane's fingers, "Thank you so much for saving Betty in a time of crisis. I'd like to take you out to dinner to show my appreciation."

Just as the man finished speaking, a van that had lost control suddenly dashed into the sidewalk and sped toward them!

"Watch out!" Jack shouted and then held Jane in his arms to avoid the vehicle. As a result, that van crashed into the school gate!

The surrounding students and teachers were stunned, and the scene became chaotic in an instant!

When Jane came to her senses, she realized that Betty's dad was embracing her, and she momentarily did not know where to put her hands.

She smelled the faint scent of tobacco from the man's body and noticed the look in his eyes.

"Jane Sidney!" Just as Jane was separating herself from Jake, she suddenly heard someone calling her name.

Jane hurried to look in the direction of the voice source, and for a split second, she pushed Jack away in shock.

Jack took a few steps back, startled, and frowned as he asked, "Miss Sidney, are you alright?"

At that moment, an eerie and even somewhat terrifying sneer reached their ears!

Jane composed herself, then turned to look at Edward, who appeared out of nowhere.

Jack also turned to Edward and inquired, "Who is this gentleman?"

Looking at Jane's nervous expression, Jack then realized the relationship between the woman and the man. Therefore, he shrugged and explained, "Don't get me wrong. A van was coming at us, and it was hazardous, so I had to pull Miss Sidney out of the way."

Edward shot a sidelong glance at the speaker and then at the car that had rammed into the school's front door.

Instantly, he frowned tightly.

Jane let out a sigh of relief, "Yes, that's what happened! Thank you, Mr. Smith. I'm fine." While speaking, her eyes kept searching for Betty, and she noticed that the chauffeur protected the girl well.

Jack looked at Jane and then at Edward, "Excuse me. I'm leaving." With that, he walked towards Betty and the chauffeur.

Soon, the police and the school security squad arrived at the scene.

Fortunately, there were not many people around the school gate when the accident happened. Luckily, only a few students suffered some minor injuries. The police dragged the driver out of the van and surprisingly discovered that he was driving drunk.

Edward glanced at Jane, who looked slightly messy, and then slowly moved his eyes to Jack and the others. Jack, Betty, and the chauffeur got into the Maserati and left.

Edward then refocused his eyes on Jane.

Jane let out a light sigh, pretending that she did not notice or care about the man's gaze.

Holding her bag and the documents with one hand, she managed to take out her cell phone from the pocket with the other and wanted to call Stephen, who said he would come to pick her up.

Suddenly, Edward stepped forward to snatch her phone away. The woman surprisingly looked at the man in front of her, who was at least a head taller than her, and yelled, "Edward Pike, give me back my phone!"

"Who is that man?" Edward then bossily took the woman's bag and documents and walked towards where his car was parked.

"Give me back my stuff. I can take them myself." As Edward ignored her, Jane had to catch up with him and say, "My brother said he'd pick me up today."

"He's got occupied by something and won't come today." Edward stopped at the roadside. Sean, who was driving a blue Bugatti, pulled up in front of him and then got out to open the door for the man.

Edward put Jane's things in the car and then turned to stare at her.

Given no other option, Jane pursed her lips and obediently got into the car.

The car started to move.

Jane remained silent on the way, and Edward did not open his mouth except for occasionally answering some phone calls. The atmosphere in the car was slightly weird.

Feeling bored, Jane tilted her head to look out of the car, realizing that it was running on an unfamiliar road. She then turned to look at Edward and asked in surprise, "Edward Pike, didn't you say you were going to take me home? Where are you taking me now?
