Fantasy Romance>The Shadow of Forever>CHAPTER 4
CHAPTER 4
Ann’s mom noticed that she won't get out any info right now and instructed Alexa the AI from Amazon that her husband had installed for her last birthday to turn on Classical music and they enjoyed the rest of the meal in silence.
After dinner, Ann is about to clean up. “Don’t worry about it, I will clean up tonight,” her mom says stacking the plates.
Ann made her way to her room. “Good night mom.”
“Good night my darling, don’t forget to set your alarm, I don’t want to be late tomorrow morning.”
Ann went into her room and noticed her window is still open. She walks over to her window to close it not noticing Parris sitting on her chair in the corner of her room. After she closed the window and curtains, she went to her bathroom and took a shower, still not noticing Parris.
She took a long hot shower and after drying herself she left her towel in the bathroom and went to sit at her dresser to dry her hair. She switches on her main bedroom light “Alexa, please switch on the main light.”
Alexa, “Sure, switching on the main bedroom light,” the AI voice responds as the lights switch on.
“What the hell!” Ann jumps up from her white Luxe Joybird armchair to grab her bathrobe.
“How did you get in here?” she asks angrily.
“The window, I have been sitting here, waiting for you to finish dinner. So, your mom thinks I am handsome?” Parris asks mockingly.
“Get out!” Ann orders him, pointing at her door.
“Think it best I leave the way I came,” he says standing up, deciding not to tell her that a Vampire must leave a house the same way they came in.
“What about a good night kiss before I leave?” he asks, reaching out to lift her chin.
Ann smacks his hands away and makes sure she keeps her eyes away from his so that he can not compel her. Parris notices it and grins.
“It does not work like that, we compel with our voice, don’t worry I won’t compel you,” Parris says, now standing in front of the window.
Ann notices his reflection in her dressing table mirror, “I thought vampires don’t have a reflection?”
“We do, we just can not see our own reflection,” Parris answer amused that a clever girl like Ann believes in Vampire tales.
“Do you need to be invited into a house? Did my mom invite you in?” Ann asks eagerly to know.
“Yes, we need to be invited in, into some houses. Depends if an Inupiat shaman put an invitation spell on a house,” Parris answer, wondering if he must compel her to forget.
“Shaman?” Ann asks confused.
“Yes, a native witch doctor, if you must.”
“I know what a Shaman is,” Ann says annoyed and eager to get him to leave. She found him incredibly attractive, but she is slightly angry about the fact that he and his friends used her as a meal, more then once.
“All the houses in this town seem to have an invitation spell on them,” Parris confess.
“Wow, so my house is not the first one you invade. How long have you been in town to know all the houses has an invitation spell on?” Ann asks worriedly.
“We have a compound on the outskirts to the North of town, we arrived here for the first time 500 years ago. We have housing in every Alaskan town. Actually, we have housing in almost every city in the world. All Vampire nest do,” Parris explains, not really knowing why he feels he can trust her.
Ann takes a deep breath, “please will you leave? In Vampire stories a human can uninvite a Vampire, I guess that is just in stories?”
Parris just laughs at her and decides not to tell her the truth. A Shaman must put an invitation withdrawal spell on a house as well. Either any human that is in the house at that moment or the human that invited them in. In this housing case, it seems the Shaman that placed the spells either did not place any of the two or perhaps placed the spell that the inviter must withdraw. Parris left with Vampire speed, leaving a gash of wind fluttering the curtains.
Ann closed the window with relief and made a mental note to visit a nearby village to find a Shaman. She does not think that they are still in practice but since her town has werewolves and Vampires surely, she will find Shamans. She shut her window once more and sits down in front of her dresser that matches her armchair. For a moment she flushes red at the thought that this is the second time in one day that Parris saw her naked. She tries to put it out of her mind and starts to dry her hair.
Ann put on her cotton, laced trimmed nightgown but not before she scanned her room to make sure no one sneaked in again. She goes to her window and turns the log into position. She also goes to her bathroom and makes sure the window is shut properly. This night she decided to also lock her bedroom door. She is not sure if she felt fear or not, all she knew is that she will have no Vampires feeding on her tonight.
Ann struggled to fall asleep. She kept putting on her bedroom light to make sure there is no one in her room, she eventually fell asleep with her light on.
Parris lingered near Ann’s house all night. He knows he is attracted to her but wonders why he feels a sense of possessiveness over a girl he only met four nights ago. Parris thinks back to a human girlfriend he was very much in love with about 900 years ago. He shared his secrets with her as they got married with the permission of the Council. Only the Council can give permission to Vampire and Haman unions. It is a common practice. Since it is nearly impossible for a human to become a Vampire and common for Vampires and Humans to fall in love, it is only fair for humans to know the truth when they enter marriage with a Vampire. Humans that are part of Vampire Nest are not allowed to be compelled by the Vampires, they must be there willingly. When humans become Vampires, the High Council makes them promise a few things. A vampire promise is the most binding promise made. Attempt to break the promise and your skin will start to boil.
Vampires feeding on their human partner and in turn the human replaced the blood lost by drinking their Vampire partner’s blood. A Vampire needed to feed every 3 days to stay sane and when their blood is in a human, a vampire can not drink from the human as it will make them weak. A vampire will drink two pints of their human partner and give two pints back.
