Chapter 17 The Haunting Caroline
"A woman waited for her husband at home.
The husband had been gone for a long time.
He lived a happy life with another woman.
But his wife held on to awaiting him.
She had reminded him when he left.
Don't forget her when he succeeds in becoming a high-level official.
Unfortunately, the crops failed to survive due to the drought for three years in a row.
There was no food left.
Her parents-in-law died of missing their son.
She dug a grave to bury them..."
As a familiar song sounded, Charlie listened carefully and recognized Zoey's voice.
His grandma was a fan of traditional Chinese opera. She invited a troupe to perform for those old friends at present. Charlie wondered why Zoey was on stage.
Frank took a sip of wine and kept it in the mouth before swallowing it. Then he looked up at the woman in costume on stage who had a slim figure and a crisp voice.
"Your wife is amazing. Her performance is no worse than the famous singer." Frank exclaimed.
"I have no idea that her singing is so good."
Charlie smiled at the girl on stage. She was competent to do lots of things, including fixing toilets and light bulbs that a man usually does. But the more he loved her, the more reluctant he was to see her do many things.
When Zoey finished singing and got off the stage, Frank applauded and said to Charlie, "Next month is my grandma's birthday. Can I invite Zoey to sing for her?"
Charlie refused at once. "My wife is not a singer!"
"You are worried about her? How can you say you're not in love with her?" Frank reclined on the sofa, teasing his best friend while feeling happy for him.
Seeing that Charlie did not reply, Frank grinned meaningfully.
"It's a blessing for you to find such a young wife."
Jim Jordan, one of Charlie's friends, was drinking alone. The sight of Charlie's beam made him feel bitter.
Jim thought to himself, "Maybe it's not right for Caroline to leave without telling Charlie. But how could Charlie do this?
He falls in love with someone else in such a short time.
And he even married this woman who was from the bottom of the society.
How could he do that to humiliate Caroline and her family?
Caroline is innocent and beautiful. There must be some reasons behind her departure. How can Charlie, Caroline's ex-fiancé, show no concern about her?"
Jim was drunk and staggered towards Charlie with two glasses of wine. He handed one of the glasses to Charlie, saying, "Charlie, let me toast you. I wish you and that woman... to grow old together and bear babies soon. "
Charlie did not take the glass. "Sorry, the doctor said I could not drink."
He wanted to follow the doctor's suggestions so that his legs could be cured soon. Only after that could he fulfill his promise to have a grand wedding with Zoey.
"Okay, I'll drink it for you." Jim quickly drank both glasses of wine. Frank frowned and reminded him. "Jim, don't drink too much, or you may get drunk and embarrass yourself in public."
Jim looked at Charlie condescendingly and said, "It's immoral for one to chase a friend's wife. Now that Caroline is no longer your fiancée, I've decided to chase her."
"Jim!" Frank snapped.
"You're ridiculous. The person you decide to chase is Caroline, not me. Why do you tell Charlie that?"
Zoey's voice sounded meters away.
Charlie looked over to see his wife, who wore no make-up but still looked gorgeous.
As a fan of Caroline, Jim was hostile and contemptuous of Zoey. "You may not know that Caroline and Charlie were childhood sweethearts..."
Zoey interrupted Jim. "What do you mean? Do you want to tell me that Charlie still thinks of Caroline after he married me?
I don't think you're right about that.
And no matter how much they loved each other, that's the past.
I am the one who does and will accompany Charlie."
