Chapter 4 Fiancé
At this moment, Virginia was also flicking through a brochure. When she saw a familiar bracelet, she suddenly rose in astonishment.
She threw the brochure to a side and walked to a corner secretly. Then, she called Sofia who soon answered the phone.
"Mom, why is my bracelet in the auction house? When I exchanged it for the money, I told you I would redeem it one day. Why..."
Before she could finish her words, Sofia interrupted in an impatient voice, "What's your tone? How can you talk like this to your mother?"
"I..."
"Isn't it just a bracelet? I can't believe you've kept this for so long. I don't want dead people's things in my house, so I auction it. Besides, can you really pay the debt of one million yuan? Don't tell me I have to wait for dozens of years."
"Perhaps you can't pay it for your whole life, my little good-for-nothing. I'm playing cards and don't have time to waste on you. Don't bother me with such a trivial thing again."
The phone was hung up all of a sudden. Virginia heard the beeps from it and puffed sulkily and helplessly. Her shoulders trembled uncontrollably, but she had nowhere to vent her anger.
When she turned around, her heart jolted. Crystal was right behind her silently.
"The bracelet is yours? The auction items here are all very expensive. How could you have such a thing? Don't do anything foolish because of money!"
Seeing the worry on Crystal's face, Virginia had her tension eased a lot.
She shook her head, but she still felt heartbroken because the bracelet was the only thing her parents had left. "That's what my birth parents left for me."
Crystal opened her eyes wide in surprise. "But you were dropped in the orphanage, weren't you? You were so little by then. How could you remember who your parents were? Besides, now that they abandoned you, they couldn't leave something for you to find them."
"No, I..."
Virginia was irritated and wanted to retort. But she thought of something and fell into silence, which aroused Crystal's suspicion.
Crystal approached her friend and held her shoulders. "Well, let's see how much the bracelet will be. If I can afford it, I'll lend you money. If I can't, let's borrow some from Liam. We'll make it with our joint efforts."
"Thank you," Virginia said in an almost inaudible voice.
Just then, a woman came to Crystal's side and had a meaningful look at Virginia. Then, she whispered something to Crystal.
Crystal looked at Virginia in shock and stood up. "Virgee, I'll be back in a minute."
She followed the woman out and left Virginia alone absent-minded.
From the balcony on the second floor, Virginia looked down at the guests coming in one after another. The auction might soon begin.
Suddenly, she narrowed her eyes and squatted down hurriedly.
A few seconds later, she straightened up cautiously and peeped down again.
On a seat in the second row was a man who she would never forget. He was talking to a person next to him.
His smile was familiarly wicked and confident.
"Why is he here? Oh, Crystal said the auction today is important with many big shots. It's normal for Wilson Baker to attend the event."
While she hesitated over whether to leave here, her sleeve was dragged by someone. With a cry of fear, she looked up only to see Crystal's puzzled face.
"What's wrong? You look weird today." Before Virginia could shake her head, Crystal clapped her hand excitedly. "Someone told me a rich man would bid for your bracelet and give it to you if you go to meet him. It's such a good deal!"
Virginia was stunned and furrowed her brows in displeasure. "Crystal, are you kidding? How can I accept something from a stranger and dine with him?"
Crystal also got a little angry. She tramped her foot and pouted her lips. "Come on! You just need to meet him and I'll accompany you! Now that you're a poor orphan, why can't you put down your cheap dignity for once?"
"You..." Virginia stared at Crystal with her watery eyes and felt chaotic in her mind.
Had Crystal been thinking of her this way?
Crystal felt somewhat regretful for what she had said and scratched her hair with embarrassment. "I'm sorry. I, I just want to help you."
For a moment, there was an awkward silence.
The auction began. Instead of going to work, they hid in a concealed place and peeked down.
Being a secondary item in this auction, the bracelet was the third to be displayed.
Crystal looked at the downstairs with greater excitement than Virginia.
The starting price of the bracelet was 500 thousand yuan and the bid increment was 100 thousand.
Hearing the price, Virginia was discouraged to know that she couldn't afford it even with her friends' help.
If only that bastard hadn't torn off the check!
She subconsciously lowered her head and touched the ring on the finger. To avoid attracting attention, she used a small piece of cloth to wrap her finger, pretending to be injured.
While she was depressed, the price rocketed up to 1.5 million yuan in the blink of an eye.
The bidder was the wicked man who she feared – Wilson Baker.
She was panicked. If he knew the bracelet was hers, he would definitely bully her in all ways.
She seemed to see her tragic future.
At this desperate moment, a deep pleasant voice lit up her heart.
"Two million."
This price was double the value of the bracelet. Wilson had a glance at the man in front of him and tutted disdainfully. He didn't bid anymore.
Finally, Kent Lopez attained the bracelet.
Virginia sighed with relief. But when she turned around, she saw Crystal's pale face that made her confused. "Crystal, are you all right?"
"It's none of your business. Don't be noisy..."
"..."
After a second, Crystal grabbed Virginia's hand with regret written on her face. "I'm so sorry, Virgee. I'm just in a bad mood. I don't know what's wrong with me. You know I'm also poor, so how can I look down on you?"
Virginia gave a forced smile as Crystal almost touched the ring.
Her heart was jolting, and she broke free and said, "Never mind. I know you care about me."
Crystal smiled awkwardly and mentioned the previous topic again, "Can you follow me to meet that man? Trust me. It's nothing bad. It's good for us to know more rich people. After all, we can't stay in our turtle shells all our lives."
Was it him? The man who had attained her bracelet and spent an intimate night with her?
Did he know the bracelet was hers? Was that why he had bid for it?
If he had two million yuan, why had he stolen her wallet? Was that a misunderstanding or something?
For a moment, her brain was stuffed with questions.
Her heart was softened as she thought of that man. After a while of hesitation, she nodded under Crystal's expectant eyes.
Anyway, she had to ask for her things back.
"Great! You finally came round. Captain Carson, let's go!" Seeing that Virginia was not angry, Crystal began raving again.
Although Crystal bore no ill will, Virginia still felt a little disappointed.
