Chapter 6 Engagement
Mrs. Reed admired Stars very much. She was the first woman who dared to throw a pillow at James and didn't irritate him.
Mrs. Reed explained for him, "Miss White, Mr. Green wants you to be the little princess's nanny because she likes you very much. You're free to make any request."
Hearing that, Stars realized that she had misunderstood a good man.
Ahem.
But it was his ambiguous words that caused misunderstanding.
She refused directly, "I don't want to be a nanny."
Although she liked Alice, that didn't mean she had to be her nanny.
The incident three years ago had left a deep scar on her. She liked children but couldn't stay long with them.
She pushed Alice away gently.
Now that she couldn't accompany this little girl, she shouldn't give hope to her.
Anyway, after this day, they would live their own lives and never meet again.
"See you." Stars picked up her coat and hung it on her shoulder. Then, she left without looking back.
"Sir..." Mrs. Reed had never seen such a situation before.
While others tried all ways to fawn on James, this woman refused his request so straightforwardly.
James was both irritated and amused. Except for her, not a single woman had thrown anything at him or rejected him.
Good! Excellent!
When Stars went back to the movie city, someone shouted, "Stars, a man is waiting for you in the tea house!"
Stars was perplexed. Who would come here and visit her? "Okay," she replied.
Then, she walked to the tea house.
The whole building had been booked, with two well-trained bodyguards standing at its door. Stars realized who was there inside and felt more than excited.
"Grandpa Howard!" As she stepped in, she saw a gray-haired yet spirited old man sitting in the middle of the tea house.
Howard Lope's eyes lit up with affection. "Stars, you've become even more beautiful than years ago."
"Thank you." She pulled a chair and sat down. "Grandpa Howard, what did you ask me for?"
"I want to tell you something."
Before he got into the point, he apologized, "Stars, I'm sorry that I didn't help you three years ago. I was busy handling big trouble. When I knew what happened to you, it had been too late."
By then, the Green's was crumbling. All James's brothers wanted to kick him, a sitting duck, out of the family.
In short, the struggle in a big family was beyond people's wildest imagination.
The mention of the past made Stars stunned for a second.
Then, she smiled with studied casualness. She filled Howard's cup with tea and replied, "Grandpa Howard, it was not your fault. I was the only one to blame."
It was my fault to be too weak and too blind. If only I had discovered Kitty's and Emma's wickedness...
If only I had been strong enough to protect myself and my family.
Howard gazed at the woman opposite him with sympathy.
She could have cried out loud or moaned about it. But she didn't. She attributed all the mistakes to herself.
"Oh yes, what do you want to tell me?" Stars changed the topic.
Howard Lopez was a big shot. His background was a mystery to her. She only knew that he had a wide network in his gray world, and many influential figures listened to him. In brief, he had unimaginable power.
"Stars, did your mother tell you that you have an arranged engagement?" he asked.
Stars was quiet for three seconds before she repeated his words in shock, "An arranged engagement?"
There must be something wrong! This was too old-fashioned in modern society!
Stars shook her head politely. "She didn't tell me."
"Actually, it was I who made this engagement for you. All these years, it's been like a thorn in my heart. I think it's time to pull it out."
He sighed slightly. "But sadly, the man has a daughter. If you marry him, you will be a stepmother."
Stars was rendered speechless.
He had even thought about her future life as a stepmother!
She replied seriously, "Grandpa Howard; whether he has a child or not, I can't marry him. My scandal has been blazed all over. He won't choose someone like me. So, just forget it. After all, no one will take an arranged engagement seriously nowadays."
"No. A promise made is a debt owed. How can I put it aside?" Howard didn't agree with the young idea.
But it was indeed impractical to make two strangers get married in modern days.
So he compromised, "At least you should meet him, or I would feel very uneasy like a cheater."
The older generation valued honesty very much, so Stars could only agree, "All right, I'll meet him."
Anyway, it would be only a simple date. She would leave right after meeting that man.
Howard was more than pleased. "Stars, you're such a good girl. I'll tell him now."
Then, he took out his phone and typed a text:
James, do you remember the engagement between you and a woman I told you before? She's agreed to meet you.
Just then, James was distressed by his daughter on a hunger strike. After reading the text, he felt a greater headache.
Eric had a glance at his text. "You're really going there?" But then, he added, "You'd better go. Don't let Mr. Lopez think you're dishonest."
For the older generation, honesty was the most critical measure of a person.
James gave Eric a stare to shut him up. Then, he looked at Alice. "You really don't eat anything?"
Alice hadn't eaten anything since she went back from the hospital. When Mrs. Reed told him about this on the phone, he was having a meeting. But he could only leave the company and go home.
At this moment, Alice was pulling a face. What a stubborn girl!
The rice and dishes in front of her had been reheated many times. But she didn't surrender herself to it.
"What's wrong with the little princess?" Eric had gone back from the company with James, but he didn't know what happened.
James knew his daughter best. He narrowed his eyes and said, "She wants to meet Stars White."
Hearing the name, Alice's eyes suddenly lit up with expectancy, completely exposing her thoughts.
Eric was surprised. "Seems she loves that woman deeply."
For Stars white, she even protested against her father by hunger strike!
Eric had learned from Mrs. Reed that Stars refused to be a nanny. He said, "I have an idea to make Stars compromise. Now that the soft tactic failed, we can use a hard method, though it's a little despicable."
James looked at his obstinate daughter, helplessly, and waved his hand. "Just do it."
...
Soon came the day for Stars to meet her arranged date.
She set off in a sweatsuit.
According to Howard's description, that man was in his early 30s and had a daughter. In her mind, Stars had pictured a middle-aged, paunchy, and bald man.
Tut-tut!
